Does Calcium Really Strengthen Your Teeth?

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
Does Calcium Really Strengthen Your Teeth? We know that calcium keeps our bones strong. Since teeth are also a type of bone, calcium provides many benefits to them too. Your tooth health relies on seven minerals and vitamins to stay strong. These include calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and vitamins A, C, D, and K which strengthen your tooth enamel.

The Role of Calcium In Your Teeth

Our teeth love calcium products since they fortify the tooth structure. As we grow older, the calcium phosphate in our enamel can wear off. Consuming calcium-rich products can help protect the enamel, strengthen the teeth, and produce healthy gums.

However, if we do not get enough calcium in our body, it can lead to major issues. Many of us know that shortage of calcium may lead to conditions like osteoporosis in the bones of our legs, hips, and back. However, this disease also results in a weak jaw.

That's because when the major components of your body lack calcium, it pulls this vital mineral from other sources like your teeth.
When this happens, you may experience weakened tooth roots and loosened teeth. You may also experience a change in the shape of your jaw.

The Best Sources of Calcium

One of the best ways to get calcium in your body is through dairy food like milk, yogurt, and cheese. However, if you are lactose intolerant or vegan, you can find plenty of other good sources of calcium including green vegetables like broccoli, calcium-fortified cereals, and salmon. You may also ask your GP to prescribe calcium supplements.

However, even calcium needs to be taken in the right dosage. Plaque, gum disease, and even heart disease have been linked to excess calcium in your body. For an average adult, 1000 mg of calcium is enough for a day.

Eating a nutritional and balanced diet can help you get the calcium your body craves and support your teeth. You should also limit consumption of sugary food as they can weaken your enamel. To learn more about how to get enough calcium to get a great smile, schedule an appointment with your doctor and your doctor at Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group by calling us at (301) 585-0400 today.
