Specialties

As long as they have no pain or problems, the condition of their teeth is simply not something that crosses their minds on a day to day basis. However, the moment a problem arises, then we are quickly escalated from an afterthought to an urgent need.

As dental specialists, we understand completely how a dental emergency can be a terrifying experience, which is why we here at Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group take pride in providing our patients with the highest quality care. Whether you have sustained unexpected tooth loss, you find that you are suffering from a dental infection arising from periodontal disease, or you have an uneven smile that needs correction; you can rely on us treating you with both expertise and compassion.

Prosthodontics

A prosthodontist is the most qualified dentist you can see if you are missing one or more teeth. Dr. Kabasela has completed dental school and three additional years of educational training during a prosthodontic graduate program. While many general dentists can perform some prosthetic procedures, prosthodontists have dedicated their lives to this type of dental care.

Periodontics

Periodontists and their staff have experience, training, and education on how to keep your gums as healthy as possible, including the tissues attached to your gums. When you have gum disease, a periodontist is the best specialist to help you correct your oral health. They can do scaling and root planing, pocket reductions which decrease the space between your gums and teeth, and even laser procedures to help rid your mouth of excess bacteria.

Orthodontics

Orthodontists aim to prevent misaligned teeth and correct teeth that have already become misaligned. Orthodontists also correct alignment issues with the jaw. Orthodontists go out of their way to learn about how to prevent, diagnose, and treat bad bites (usually teeth alignment issues).

What You Need to Know about Choosing a Dental Specialist

The field of dentistry spans across so many different specialties, which can make choosing the right kind of specialist that you need for your dental concerns a challenge. Knowing the different types of areas of specialty, and what they specifically address, can help you narrow down the type of dental specialist that you need.

For instance, if you are having problems with your gums, you may want to see a periodontist. Periodontists are the experts on everything to do with your gums can help you diagnose and treat any concerns that you may have about them. If you have active gum disease, for instance, you will want to see a periodontist. If you are missing teeth, you may want to consult with a prosthodontist. They can take a look at the space left behind by your tooth loss and help you determine which type of dental restoration, such as an Implant, a bridge, or even a full or partial denture, is best for you. If your concerns center around your dental alignment and issues with your bite, an orthodontist may be your best bet. They can help you with a wide variety of concerns such as an overbite, underbite, or gaps or spaces between your teeth.

Choosing a dental specialist for your oral health concerns is a smart decision for many reasons. Just like you would not expect a general physician to treat problems specifically about your heart, you should not expect a general dentist to have the same depth of training as we do on your specific dental concern. While a general dentist can help point you in the right direction, they simply lack the advanced training and education that specialists have. Often, we have three to four years of extra schooling that a general dentist does not have. You can save time and get started on treatment sooner when you can take your concerns directly to the expert on the subject.

We Can Help, Regardless

It may be tricky to know when you can see a general dentist and when you need to see a specialist. You may not be able to determine this on your own, which is fine. If you see a dentist and they refer you to see one of us, then you will know that you need advanced treatment. However, if your problems are acute or specific, then you can probably determine that you will need to see a specialist to treat it. This can include issues with your gums, your tooth loss, or your dental alignment.
