Periodontics

Dentist reviewing digital dental records at Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group Many people know what a dentist is, but there is still quite a bit of confusion surrounding our area of medicine. As periodontists, we are indeed a type of dentist, but unlike traditional dentists, we have a more specialized area of study. Instead of focusing on general dental health, we instead are more invested in the health of your gums and the structures of your mouth that surround your teeth.

We help to make sure your gums are free from disease and infection, and we have the knowledge and skill to diagnose, treat, and prevent gum disease in all of its forms. If we do detect that our patients do have gum disease, we here at Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group work to treat it quickly to ensure the best possible outcome for you. We also perform surgery for Dental Implants, making us the go-to dental experts for anything about your gums and their wellbeing.

What is a Periodontist and What Do They Do?

If you had issues with your gums, then you need to see us. As periodontists, we are a specialized type of dentist that address and treats problems that can affect your gums. This not only includes your oral health, but we can also help treat problems that can affect the appearance of your gums and your smile.

One of the most common types of chronic disease that Americans have is periodontal disease or gum disease. Caused by plaque building up against your teeth and gums, the bacteria in this buildup can attack your gum tissue, leading to inflammation. If it remains untreated, it can cause many problems for you, including heart attack, stroke, cancer, and even death. When we meet a patient who has periodontal disease, we want to work to quickly treat and manage it.

One way we will do this is through a procedure called scaling and a root planing. A scaling procedure includes removing all of the hardened buildup (also known as calculus) from your teeth and underneath your gums. We will also smooth down your tooth roots to make it easier for your gums to reattach to them, and harder for bacteria to build up again. This is called root planing and can help slow, or even stop, the progression of gum disease.

We also surgically place dental implants in patients who are looking for a permanent restoration for their tooth loss. Before we proceed with a Dental Implant, we will determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure. We can also help patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their smile because of their gums. For instance, patients who have an overly gummy smile may benefit from gingival contouring. Patients who have teeth that look long may be satisfied with the results that they could get from a gum graft.
