Numb or Tingling Tongue Causes & Treatment
Posted on 4/11/2022 by Evan
There are many different reasons you may experience a numb or tingling tongue. In this article, we are going to take a look at some of the most common reasons we have seen and why you may have this condition, as well as how it can be treated.
What Causes a Numb or Tingling Tongue?
Several different things can cause a numb or tingling tongue. One of the most common reasons people experience numb or tingling tongues is a lack of vitamins and minerals. This can be caused by several different things, including not eating enough fruits and vegetables daily, not drinking enough water during the day (which also affects how your body absorbs nutrients), and certain medications that may cause a loss of vitamins and minerals.
Canker Sores
Canker sores are little ulcers that show up in the mouth and can cause irritation, lack of taste/smell, as well as a numb or tingling tongue. They typically heal on their own within two weeks, but if you do not drink enough water during this time, it may take longer to get rid of them.
Hypoglycemia
Low blood sugar can cause a numb or tingling tongue. This is typically caused by overeating sugar, not having enough protein in your diet, and exercising excessively without taking time to refuel properly.
Hypocalcemia
Low calcium levels in the body or hypocalcemia are another common reason people experience a numb tongue. This typically occurs when someone has had their parathyroid glands removed (which help regulate calcium), as well as problems with the adrenal gland and pituitary gland that can affect how much calcium gets into your blood.
Treatment Options
Once a health professional has determined what is going on, they will provide you with treatment options. Typically, this consists of giving you vitamins and minerals (either through the mouth or injection) and medications like antibiotics for infections or anti-inflammatory drugs if caused by something like Canker Sores.
