What To Do About a Chipped or Broken Tooth
Posted on 3/7/2022 by Evan
If you've ever had a tooth chip or break, you know that it's not only painful but can also be quite embarrassing. Not to worry though, our experience will ensure that you get through this experience with as little pain and discomfort as possible. Here are the steps you need to take:
Check on The Status Of The Tooth
The first thing you need to do is determine the status of the tooth. If it's a small chip, there's a good chance that your dentist can fix it with a filling or bonding. However, if the break is more severe, your dentist may suggest taking a course of action such as crowning or root canal therapy. If you're experiencing pain, bleeding, or swelling, please see your dentist as soon as possible as it can get worse f left unattended.
What You Can Do To Help Yourself
Once you've determined the status of your tooth and what course of action needs to be taken, there are a few things that will help ease some pain. First of all, chew on ice or suck on an ice cube until you can see your dentist if possible. This helps by numbing the area and taking away at least some of the discomfort. Second, try gargling with warm salt water (one teaspoon sea salt per glass). Lastly, take ibuprofen for any swelling or inflammation as needed – never aspirin unless it's been prescribed by your doctor!
Is a Broken Tooth a Dental Emergency?
A broken tooth is not always a dental emergency, but if it's causing pain or bleeding, then it most certainly is. In some cases, the dentist may be able to fix the tooth without seeing you immediately; however, there are other times when an emergency appointment is necessary to avoid further damage and pain. So if you're experiencing any of the following symptoms, please go ahead and give us a call: severe pain, swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing, or opening your mouth wide.
