Periodontal Abscess and How They Are Treated

Posted on 10/11/2021 by Evan
Periodontal Abscess and How They Are TreatedPeriodontal abscesses are growths of pus and bacteria that grow right at the base of the teeth and push the teeth away from the roots of the gums. Historically, treating these abscesses has been difficult and has been one of the major reasons for tooth extraction in oral dentistry. However, modern medicine has come a long way, and there are a variety of treatments that can combat these abscesses.

Antibiotics That Fight Abscesses

One of the first antibiotics that fight abscesses is penicillin. Penicillin is a generic antibiotic and the first ever made. The uses for penicillin are extensive, and we use them to treat any bacteria based illnesses. Periodontal abscesses, being pockets of bacteria caused by the gum disease, falls under this category. Taken under the guidance of a doctor, penicillin can easily combat abscesses.

Another drug developed to fight periodontal abscesses is Metronidazole. Metronidazole is a drug used to combat mouth illnesses and other skin rashes. Your skin can become quite irritated because of the abscess, so this acts as an especially good treatment. Other similar drugs include Tetracyclines and Clindamycin. These are other antibiotics that we use to help target abscesses in the mouth.

The main use and purpose of these antibiotics is that they prevent the abscess from spreading to other gum pockets. When you take these antibiotics, it is especially important to take the medicine exactly as prescribed by the dentist. It does not matter if you have friends or family who have taken these drugs before who recommend a different time or usage. Misusing antibiotics is dangerous and risky because it gives an opportunity for the bacteria to become immune to the drug, requiring more surgery or more drugs to combat them.
