How Night-Time Mouth Guards Differ from Those For Sports

Posted on 8/9/2021 by Evan
How Night-Time Mouth Guards Differ from Those For SportsMouth guards are removable oral devices that help protect your teeth against physical damage. There are two main categories of mouth guards: those made for nighttime use and those designed to protect your teeth when playing. Here are the differences between night-time mouth guards and sports mouth guards.

Purpose and Time Worn

Sports mouth guards are designed to be used while indulging in sporting activities. Considering their nature and use, they are normally a bit tougher and durable to effectively protect your teeth from any sudden impact. Contrary, night mouth guards are designed to be worn throughout the night, for the period prescribed. Therefore, unlike sports mouth guards, nigh-time mouth guards are usually medically prescribed and monitored for the best results.

Area of Teeth Covered

Sports mouth guards cover the teeth all the way from the crown to the gum line. They also go beyond the gum line to cover the junction and roots underneath your gums. It is not a big concern when saliva and bacteria accumulate around the surface of your teeth because you will wear them for only a short period. Nonetheless, the coverage provides complete protection from potential damage and injury. On the other hand, night mouth guards cover only your teeth' surface. They don't cover any portion of your gums or tooth root. This is helpful because bacteria and saliva can get trapped around your gums when sleeping.

It is important to use each mouth guard for its intended purpose. This is because changing their roles can lead to significant damage. For instance, using a night mouth guard for sporting activities can result in dental injuries. The reason is that they don't provide adequate protection that a sporting mouth guard offers. Using a sporting mouth guard when sleeping can also result in various oral setbacks. Contact our office for further information on the differences between sport and night mouth guards.
