Why Toothaches that Come with Fevers Are So Worrisome
Posted on 7/26/2021 by Evan
If you have a toothache plus a fever, you may have a serious infection. Therefore, you need to contact us immediately if you have tooth pain and a high fever.
Why a Fever Is a Warning
A throbbing or painful cavity signifies that a dental problem is becoming serious. What was once a basic cavity has turned into an infected tooth. When a toothache is accompanied by pain, swelling, and redness, these signs all warn of infection and a possible abcess. If a tooth infection continues without treatment, a small pocket of puss will develop inside the tooth called an abcess. As your body tries to fight off the infection, the pocket will swell and usually ends up rupturing. If the pocket does rupture, you will instantly notice that the tooth pain has subsided. However, when this happens, it means the infection has spread.
Don't Wait Until You Have a Fever
When you experience a fever with a toothache, it indicates the dental infection has spread to other parts of the body. In turn, the body starts to heat up to kill off the infection. However, the fever also can affect your health, especially if your body temperature rises above 101 degrees Fahrenheit. If this happens, it may be a sign that sepsis has set in and the infection has entered the bloodstream. If this happens, you will need hospitalization. According to statistics, 1 in 8 people who receive hospitalization for sepsis die from the condition.
Don't wait until you have life-threatening sepsis before you do anything about toothache pain. Make it a resolution to practice regular oral care by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once daily. If you do have a toothache, have it treated immediately. Do what you can to preserve your oral health so you don't experience an even more serious health event. Give us a call today if you have any dental problem or ailment.
