We Can Help You If Quitting Smoking Is In Your Future

Posted on 5/10/2021 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
We Can Help You If Quitting Smoking Is In Your FutureIf you want better gum health, you need to quit smoking. If you would like to make this happen, you can do so. You just need to make up your mind and get the needed support. That is where our dental services can come into play. We can support your decision to quit and improve your gum and tooth health overall.

Why Smoking Is Not Good for the Gums and Teeth

Smoking reduces the oxygen flow and the circulation. Therefore, people who smoke are at a greater risk for getting cavities and developing gum disease. That is because smoking runs down the immune system and causes a condition, known as xerostomia, or dry mouth. When you get dry mouth, your saliva cannot flow to get rid of plaque and odor-calling bacteria. Therefore, you don't have the enzymes or good bacteria in the mouth needed to prevent cavities and gum disease.

What Happens When You Quit Smoking

When you quit smoking, the tar and nicotine that you have inhaled slowly start to diminish. You will automatically breathe much easier. You will also experience a better immune response. In turn, you will reduce your chances of developing a gum infection or cavities. When you finally quit smoking, it will also motivate you to take better care of your gums and teeth. When this happens, you will instantly see an improvement in your gum and tooth health. You are much less likely to neglect your oral care routine if you don't smoke and can make it your goal to quit using any type of tobacco product.

Smoking Turns into a Vicious Cycle

We applaud anyone who chooses to quit smoking, as the habit can turn into a vicious cycle. If you smoke, you can easily develop gum disease, which is harder to treat when you have this kind of habit. Therefore, quitting smoking is a big step in the right direction toward better oral health.

Have you made it your goal to quit smoking? If so, we will do all that we can to support your decision. Give us a call today to schedule an exam and professional cleaning.
