Which Medications Cause Dry Mouth?

Dry mouth can be attributed to alcohol, caffeine, and even poor oral hygiene. However, one of the most common causes of dry mouth is medication. If you're suffering from dry mouth, take a look and see if you're taking any of the following medication.
Antidepressants
There are a number of different types of anti-depressants that can cause dry mouth – some of the most common include tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). However, even norepinephrine dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) can result in dry mouth.
One class of antidepressants that doesn't always include this symptom is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs have low anticholinergic activity and thus, don't result in severe dry mouth.
Antipsychotics
Both, typical and atypical antipsychotics can cause dry mouth. These drugs can be prescribed to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Huntington's disease, depression and more. If you suffer from any of these diseases and are experiencing dry mouth, it may be a side effect of your medication.
Antihistamines
Over-the-counter antihistamines are all too common and come in a number of forms ranging from oral medication to nasal sprays. While these may combat your runny nose, they can also reduce the production of saliva and result in dry mouth.
Antibiotics
While antibiotics are sometimes warranted, taking them unnecessarily won't do you any favors – in the case of dry mouth, it does the opposite. Because antibiotics have anticholinergic properties, they can result in oral dryness. Severe dry mouth can even result in thrush.
Sometimes, simply discontinuing medication isn't enough to eliminate dry mouth. If you're suffering from dry mouth, you must treat the underlying reason to get rid of it.
