Does Fiber Help Boost Your Oral Health?

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
Does Fiber Help Boost Your Oral Health? Most people appreciate the importance of a healthy diet for good oral health. However, the emphasis is on essential nutrients such as calcium and phosphorus, which promote healthy teeth. This makes individuals underrate foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are rich in dietary fiber and beneficial to the teeth. However, to your surprise, consuming fiber will boost your oral health by cleaning your teeth and increasing saliva production.

Teeth Cleaning

After taking a diet rich in fiber, your teeth will feel fresh, as though you have brushed them. This is the effect of fiber. When you eat foods and vegetables rich in fiber, the fiber will press against your teeth surface and remove food debris. This prevents the accumulation of plaque and keeps your mouth clean. However, you should not substitute oral hygiene with consuming fiber. As fiber presses on your gums and cleans them, it also stimulates blood flow to your gums and teeth and nourishes them with nutrient supply for strong and healthy teeth.

Increased Saliva Production

Eating a diet rich in fiber calls for extra chewing before swallowing. This extra chewing stimulates salivary flow in the mouth. Saliva is useful in the mouth as a cleaning agent by flushing out food debris and bacteria. It also maintains your breath fresh by keeping your mouth hydrated. Besides cleaning your mouth, saliva is useful in balancing the mouth's pH, slowing down the multiplication and activity of cavity-causing bacteria. Given the above benefits of fiber, you should consider including fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your meal. In addition to a healthy diet, you should practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth daily with fluoride toothpaste. You should also maintain a regular dental checkup at least twice a year to keep your oral health in check. For more details on fiber and oral health, contact our office today.
