Having Even One Sensitive Tooth Can Point to An Oral Health Issue

Having Even One Sensitive Tooth Can Point to An Oral Health IssueA sensitive tooth is not something you should overlook, as any form of dental sensitivity indicates that you have some type of problem with your oral health. To ensure against tooth sensitivity, it is important to have regular cleanings and exams every 6 months so we can stay on top of any problems with dental sensitivity.

What Can Cause Dental Sensitivity?

Again, if you have any type of dental sensitivity, we need to know about it right away. The main method used for preventing sensitivity is to follow a routine program of regular and daily brushing and flossing. Brush twice a day for 2 minutes at a time and floss once a day to strengthen the gums and teeth. Dental or tooth sensitivity results from the wearing down of the dental enamel or the cementum next to the roots. When the enamel and cementum wear away, the dentin is exposed, which, in turn, makes the teeth more vulnerable to hot and cold temperatures, or any food that is sweet.

Major Reasons for Tooth Sensitivity

The enamel may wear down, causing tooth sensitivity, if you use a toothbrush with firm bristles or brush too aggressively. Erosion of the enamel or cementum can also develop from acidic foods and beverages. Other reasons may include tooth decay, leaky fillings or cracked or chipped teeth, all which expose the vulnerable layer of dentin. People who grind their teeth at night, or have a condition called bruxism, may experience dental sensitivity, as well as patients who have just had a dental treatment, such as the placement of a crown or filling. According to the Journal of Conservative Dentistry, adults, age to 20 to 50, are more likely to complain of tooth sensitivity, although the exact reason is not known. Gum recession often leads to complaints of sensitivity by older adults.

Depending on the reason, we may treat tooth sensitivity in one or more ways. While a root canal may be recommended in instances of severe decay, a mouth guard may be made if the patient clenches and grinds their teeth. We may also recommend a gum graft if a patient has recession. Any type of sensitivity should be addressed. Call us for an appointment for a consultation and exam.
