How to Tell if You Have Sleep Apnea and Need Treatment
Posted on 12/21/2020 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
Sleep apnea can be a very serious sleep disorder. If you suffer from it, you likely feel exhausted even after a full night's sleep. That's because sleep apnea is causing you to wake up dozens, even hundreds of times during the night. You may not always become fully conscious, but your body wakes up enough that you aren't able to stay in deep sleep for very long. There are several types of sleep apnea, including central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. Regardless of which type you suffer from, you'll see many of the same symptoms. If you have these symptoms, you need to seek treatment. With obstructive sleep apnea, we can help, but if you have central sleep apnea, you will need to see a specialist.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
There are a good number of symptoms that come with sleep apnea. As with many conditions, you may not necessarily suffer from all of these symptoms. However, if you do have several of these symptoms, you need to be screened for sleep apnea. The first sign you will likely notice is the feeling of being very tired all the time. This indicates that you're not sleeping well. It may be accompanied by headaches in the morning. You will likely feel irritable and have trouble concentrating due to the lack of sleep. You may become fully conscious during the night. If you do, put a pen and paper by your bed and keep track of how often you wake up so you can track your sleep patterns. Having a smart watch or other device that tracks your sleep habits can also help you see if you're waking up a lot during the night. If you wake up gasping for air, that's a very serious sign that something is wrong. Contact us as soon as you can to arrange an appointment so we can determine if you're dealing with obstructive sleep apnea.
