How Arthritis Can Lead to Oral Health Problems
Posted on 12/7/2020 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints that can make it difficult to use a toothbrush and effectively clean your teeth. However, don't despair; you can still find ways to maintain your teeth and gums. You just need to use the right dental tools and aids. Doing so will help you avoid many of the oral health problems associated with the disease.
Oral Health Problems Associated with Arthritis
Arthritis often affects older people, which makes it harder for them to clean their teeth effectively. If you have arthritis in your wrists or hands, it can be uncomfortable, if not frustrating, to hold a toothbrush. It may also be difficult to stand. Therefore, you can suffer from oral health complaints, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, cavities, or problems with the fit of your dentures. These health problems can develop, simply because you find it too painful to hold a toothbrush and brush or clean your dentures. As a result, you may neglect brushing your teeth or cleaning your dentures because of the associated pain. You may also avoid taking out your dentures at night to allow them to soak, which can lead to sore gums and problems with the fit of your dentures.
Ways to Avoid Arthritis-related Oral Health Complaints
If your arthritis is severe, it may be time to consider the use of an automatic water flosser and automatic toothbrush. These are great options, as the water of the flosser is dispensed, and the brush head moves so you don't have to move your wrists. Instead of squeezing the toothpaste tube, press down on the tube with the palm of your hand. You may also try using a tooth powder that you can sprinkle on your toothbrush. Just make sure you check with us first to make sure it is the right dental product. Sit down while brushing or when you take out your dentures to clean them to relieve any stress on your joints.
