How Often Should You Get Another Fluoride Treatment?

Posted on 8/24/2020 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
How Often Should You Get Another Fluoride Treatment?Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally found in tap water and in the ground. It is used in toothpaste and other dental products to help protect the teeth via its boosting of the oral cavity's defenses against bacteria, and preventing you from developing any complications, like gum disease. Fluoride treatment is usually administered during a check-up, when you are having a routine cleaning. It helps protect your teeth until your next check-up and makes it far less likely for a patient to develop tooth decay.

How Long Should You Wait Between Fluoride Treatments?

Firstly, the time between fluoride treatments depends on your oral health. A healthy patient will usually have them at their six-monthly check-up, or even every other six-monthly check-up. Our dentists will administer fluoride treatment when necessary. Sometimes, it can be as frequent as every three months if the condition of the mouth needs it.

Children do not need fluoride treatment, as they get the amount of fluoride they need from their toothpaste. They should be using toothpaste suitable for children and should not swallow the substance.

Fluoride treatment is only beneficial, however, when used in conjunction with other preventive and maintenance measures, such as routine cleanings with our dentists, your twice daily brushing, and the maintenance of a healthy diet. The combination of all these procedures and habits will ensure a healthy mouth.

If you feel you should have a fluoride treatment on your teeth, you can contact our office and we can discuss treatment for you. If it has been a while since your last appointment, i.e. longer than one year, then you more than likely will need fluoride treatment. Although, if you have a fluoride allergy, you must tell you beforehand, so we can avoid the use of any fluoride products during your dental appointment.
