Top Five Drinks that Stain Your Teeth
Posted on 8/10/2020 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
If you want to keep your teeth whiter, you have to limit your consumption of stain-causing beverages. The following five drinks cause staining, and therefore should be limited or removed from what you drink each day. To play it safe, drink milk or water, both of which are good for the health and appearance of the teeth.
1. Coffee
While coffee certainly kick-starts us into action each morning, it also can stain the teeth. To neutralize staining, add milk to your coffee. Also, drink water after you have your morning brew or brush your teeth about an hour after you drink the beverage. Because coffee is acidic, brushing your teeth right after drinking some java can cause more damage than good.
2. Tea
Black tea can also stain the teeth just like coffee. Again, to neutralize the effects of staining, add some milk to the tea. Drink water after your drink tea to lessen the effects. If you must drink tea, choose green tea or an herbal tea, such as peppermint tea or chamomile tea.
3. Cola
Cola is yet another drink that will stain the teeth. To reduce the chance of stains, drink your cola with a straw, placing the straw further back in the mouth. Drink colas that are sugar-free to lessen the chance of tooth decay.
4. Red Wine
Because of its acidic nature, red wine erodes the tooth enamel as well as stains the teeth. However, don't think that it is safer to drink white wine, as it will also erode the enamel and stain the teeth.
5. Hot Chocolate
Chocolate drinks also stain the teeth, although not to the same extent as coffee or tea. That is because the milk in hot chocolate neutralizes the effect. While hot chocolate does not contain stain-causing tannins like cola or tea, it does contain chromogens, which discolor the teeth.
As you can see, you need to be careful about what your drink if you want to keep your pearly whites white and glistening. If you have tooth stains or discoloration, contact our office today. We can help you have a whiter and brighter smile.
