What to Do When Your Wisdom Teeth Start Coming In

Do you have wisdom teeth erupting? If so, you may be experiencing a lot of pain. Usually, we recommend removing the wisdom teeth before they erupt and cause pain. The wisdom teeth are situated behind the molars, and if they come through, the gum tissue may appear inflamed or be tender to the touch. Naturally, this type pain may also be due to tooth decay, infection, or a damaged filling. Regardless of the reason for the discomfort, we are here to solve the problem. If you are experiencing wisdom tooth pain, the following information can help you solve the issue.
What Causes Wisdom Tooth Pain?
Wisdom tooth pain can be sharp and abrupt or develop slowly. If the teeth have come in crooked, you will experience pain or sensitivity. The wisdom teeth may also trigger an infection. See us immediately if you experience pain or an infection. We will assess the area and take the required x-rays. To relieve the pain until your appointment, we suggest keeping the area numb with an ice pack or ice chips. This will help reduce the redness and swelling. You may also take an over-the-counter pain reliever for some relief. Saltwater, comprised of two teaspoons salt and eight ounces of water, can be used to rinse the mouth and loosen food particles.
Extracting the Wisdom Teeth
The wisdom teeth are extra teeth that are not “wise†to keep. They can lead to crowding or other dental dilemmas over time. We usually recommend a complete removal of all four wisdom teeth – a procedure that is fairly routine. For some of our patients, extraction may not be an option. In these cases, we usually prescribe a mouth rinse to kill bacteria and prevent infection. We believe in making sure the wisdom teeth do not cause our patients undue discomfort.
