Mouthwash - What You Should Be Looking For
Posted on 4/15/2020 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
While an anti-bacterial mouthwash will reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth, we often recommend that patients use a mouthwash that contains fluoride and that is approved by the American Dental Association or ADA. That is because fluoride is a basic dental ingredient – one that supports the strengthening the teeth and reductions in cavities. However, before you make a choice, you need to read the following information to learn more about mouthwash ingredients.
What to Watch For in Mouthwash Ingredients
Besides fluoride, you may want to choose a mouthwash that gets rid of bad breath and kills harmful bacteria. Mouthwashes that contain cetylpyridinium chloride will keep your breath fresh and kill the bad bacteria. If you want to control gum infections or plague, find a mouthwash that features chlorhexidine as a listed ingredient. The ingredient, carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, is designed for whitening the teeth. Try to find a mouthwash that does not contain alcohol, as alcohol can burn the oral tissues. Stay away from mouthwashes that contain alcohol, as they can irritate the mouth and gums.
How to Decide on a Brand
When choosing a mouthwash, you should consider the price per ounce and check for the ADA seal of approval. If a mouthwash has this official seal, it means it has been assessed for its effectiveness. Some of the well-known brands do not feature the seal. If the main concern you have is bad breath, you may get by using a “cosmetic” mouthwash. However, a mouthwash that only provides freshening is usually not the best choice. You need to rinse that will also strengthen the teeth. That is why it is best to choose a mouthwash that contains fluoride and, perhaps, one of the above-listed ingredients.
We can help you with your choices in ADA-accepted brands of mouthwashes and dentifrices. You will also need to schedule regular cleanings and exams in our office every six months. Call us today to schedule an appointment for an assessment and consultation.
