How to Keep Teeth Safe from Morning Sickness Acids

Posted on 2/20/2020 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
How to Keep Teeth Safe from Morning Sickness AcidsMorning sickness is inappropriately named as when you are pregnant it can strike at any time of the day or night and does. It is generally thought that over half the women that are pregnant, suffer from nausea and vomiting that is caused by a sudden increase in their hormones from being pregnant.

Morning sickness as it's called ranges in severity from slight woozy feelings caused by smell to some women to some women literally vomiting severely several times a day – nonstop, roughly give or take for nearly the first half of the pregnancy. So, it is no surprise with all this vomiting of stomach acid that it is rough on your tooth enamel.

How to keep your Teeth Safe

One of the single most important things you can do is do not skip brushing. Even if a brushing makes you want to throw up. Switch to a different flavor or a plain-tasting product instead. However, whatever you switch to be sure it has fluoride in it and one that strengthens teeth and prevents cavities. If you need recommendations, please give us a call we are happy to help. You can also try changing the time of day you brush or try using a smaller amount of toothpaste.

We know that this is a difficult time, but following bouts of vomiting, try rinsing your mouth with plain water and add some baking soda to the water to neutralize those acids on your teeth as soon as possible. Try some control triggers such as peppermint lip balm or other calming scents that have been known to help morning sickness at bay – whatever might work for you. Many women often drink or sip on some ginger tea.

The reaction after vomiting so much is to want to reach for some sugary foods and drinks as energy sources because you feel depleted, but, we urge you to turn to healthier, tooth-friendly foods that will help you for long-lasting energy. We suggest cheese, veggies, and some lean proteins.

Please call our office at any time if you need help with any pain you may be having with your teeth or gums and let us help you during this difficult time.
