If you have had a cavity filled, you may be surprised to find that your new filling is causing you pain. While a little bit of sensitivity after a filling is normal and should subside within a few days, painful fillings can be a sign of other oral health issues or complications.Sensitivity After A FillingCavities do not always cause you to feel pain and sensitivity, but it can be one of the symptoms of tooth decay. When you visit our office to have your cavity filled, we will numb the area around the cavity, clean it thoroughly and remove any decayed material and then fill it. After this process, it is completely normal to experience a little bit of tooth sensitivity, especially when you consume hot or cold foods and drinks. After a few weeks, this should go away completely. If it does not, please call our office right away so that we can do a follow up examination and make sure that there are not any other problems with your tooth. Painful FillingsPainful fillings can indicate that you have a tooth that has cracked or maybe your filling is loose. If you have old fillings, they can become loose and this will also cause sensitivity and pain and can even lead to additional decay if it is not treated properly. Occasionally we encounter a patient who is allergic to the material that we use to fill the tooth. Since a silver allergy is not uncommon, it is important that you communicate with our staff if you have allergies. We do have alternative solutions for you! If you are experiencing any oral pain either in your teeth or in the tissue surrounding your teeth, please do not hesitate to call us right away and schedule an exam. We look forward to hearing from you. |
