When you have a dental crown put on to cover one of your damaged teeth, you may assume it will last forever. Unfortunately, even though dental crowns are made out of very durable materials such as metal, zirconia, or ceramics, they aren't invincible. You do have to make sure you care for your dental crowns as you would your normal teeth. Here are a few tips for managing dental crown care. Temporary Crown CareBefore we install your permanent crown, we will put on a temporary crown. The permanent crown will take a little bit of time to make—it has to perfectly fit into your mouth, so it has to be custom made to fit your bite. Since a temporary crown isn't permanently installed in your mouth, you need to avoid eating anything that's chewy or that's really hard. Both could cause your temporary crown to come out or break. Brush and Floss NormallyThe first thing to do is to make certain you continue brushing and flossing the crown and the tooth it's connected to as you normally would. You want to be especially careful that you brush the area where the crown and the tooth meet. If your tooth starts to get a cavity in the area where the crown is fused to it, the crown may come off or become loose. You need to make sure you keep the tooth as clean as you can. Watch for Issues with Your CrownEvery now and then, you want to take time to visually inspect your crown in a mirror to make certain it isn't chipped or isn't showing signs of damage. You may feel a chip in your crown when you run your tongue over it. If the crown is loose, you'll likely be able to feel that as well. Be sure to call us if you note any damage to your crown or if the crown falls off. If you have any questions or concerns about your crown, give us a call. We can repair it or replace it as needed. |
