What is the Right Amount of Toothpaste for an Adult to Use?

Posted on 3/20/2019 by Jasmine Marshall
What is the Right Amount of Toothpaste for an Adult to Use?Toothpaste is an essential item that most people use on a daily basis. However, many people don't know exactly how much toothpaste they should use, and some use too much. Read on to find out how much toothpastes adults should really use when they brush.

How Much Toothpaste Should You Use?

Some people think that they need to coat the entire brushing surface of their toothbrush with toothpaste. Sure, that might be the way advertisers market their products on TV, but you don't need nearly that much toothpaste. Instead, use a pea-sized dab, as this is the only amount required to properly clean your teeth.

As a reminder, this is the amount that adults should use. Different guidelines apply for children, as especially young children should avoid toothpaste entirely. Excessive fluoride consumption at a young age can cause fluorosis, which may lead to some permanent stains on the teeth.

Why Use Toothpaste at All?

You may have heard that it is the toothbrush that actually cleans the teeth and that the toothpaste doesn't have much impact. This is partially true, but there are still benefits available from the toothpaste itself. Toothpaste contains fluoride, which strengthens and protects the teeth, preventing cavities. It is also antibacterial and can help to re-mineralize the teeth, so ultimately, your teeth are healthier when you brush with toothpaste.

Toothpaste also helps to freshen the breath. Most toothpastes are available in varied scents and flavors, and it can simply make your mouth feel cleaner. Abrasive toothpaste can even polish your teeth while ridding your mouth of foul odors.

Knowing how much toothpaste to use is one of the first steps in maintaining good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing daily, use of a good mouthwash, and regular dental appointments are all essential. Call us today for your next cleaning and dental checkup.
