How Can You Know If You Grind Your Teeth at Night?

Posted on 2/28/2019 by Jasmine Marshall
How Can You Know If You Grind Your Teeth at Night? You hear about teeth grinding, but then you also hear that you may be doing it and not even know it. So, how is someone supposed to know if they grind their teeth in their sleep?

Well, thankfully, there are some symptoms that this could be happening. If you wake up and your jaw hurt, or your teeth themselves hurt, this could be a good sign that you need to come in and get checked out. Plus, we can usually spot some of the signs during your normal exams. That way, you will know if there is anything you need to keep an eye on.

Signs of Nighttime Bruxism

When you clench or grind your teeth at night, this is known as bruxism. While most people do not know that they struggle with this ailment, there are signs of it if you know what to look for. First, if you wake up in the morning to sore teeth or sore jaw muscles, this could point to a problem. Second, if you wake up with a headache in the temple area each morning.

This often happens if you were clenching your teeth during the night. Third, if you notice the chewing surfaces of your teeth getting flatter, this is also a sign to be on the lookout for. Fourth, if your teeth are becoming more sensitive than they ever used to be, it could also point to nighttime grinding.

If you notice any of these symptoms, bring them up at your next appointment. Tell us what symptoms you have noticed, and how often they show up. Then, we can look around at your teeth and see if your teeth are showing any sign of wear that correlate with bruxism, so we can figure out if you need any type of treatment to help protect your teeth.
