Are you one of those people who get up, brush their teeth, and go on with their day without thinking about the importance of proper oral hygiene? Most of us are. We are humans, which makes us creatures of habit. We go through the motion because it is our habit. However, that may mean that you are not doing enough to cover the basics of what you need to properly care for your oral health. Here are the basics of dental hygiene that you need to make sure you think about, and perform, regularly. Taking Care of Your Oral Health is More Than a HabitWhen you get up each morning, you should brush your teeth for at least two full minutes. You should also do the same prior to going to bed each night. This gives your teeth a clean slate which can help prevent cavities and other similar problems. One time each day, you need to make sure that you are scraping the gaps between your teeth clean by means of flossing. This needs to be done well, and should make sure it gets between each set of teeth you have. This should take you about five minutes per day. Once you are done brushing and flossing, you should also be rinsing your mouth with mouthwash to get any bacteria that may have been left behind. This kills the bacteria so that it cannot eat away at your enamel and cause problems like gum damage and cavities. You also need to include a regular visit to our office as part of your dental hygiene routine. This should be done like clockwork, every six months. That way we can make sure to get any tartar off of your teeth that your toothbrush or flossing may have missed. Plus, we can catch any problems your mouth may face early, allowing it to be easier to treat. |
