Can you Recover from Stained Teeth
Posted on 5/22/2023 by Evan
Stained teeth refer to teeth that have lost their natural color. The natural color of teeth is usually white or off-white. Stained teeth can appear brown, yellow, grey, or black. Several factors, including tobacco use, poor dental hygiene, coffee, caffeine use, and some medications, can cause stained teeth. Stained teeth can affect someone's confidence and aesthetic appearance. Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent and treat stained teeth.
Good Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene involves regular brushing of teeth and performance of dental care. Brushing the teeth removes surface stains from the tooth enamel and prevents discoloration. After using products that accelerate stained teeth, like coffee and tobacco, brushing teeth prevents the yellow-to-brown permanent stains they cause. Also, brushing teeth regularly prevents the build-up of plaque which hardens to form tartar. Tartar can take on several colors along the gum's line, from yellow to black.
Professional Whitening
Professional whitening is a cosmetic procedure performed by a dentist or dental hygienist in the dentist's office. Professional whitening involves using aggressive products like bleaching agents like Hydrogen Peroxide in gel form. This process can take one dental visit. It is safer to consult your dentist before performing professional whitening since it might not suit people with sensitive teeth and gums.
Veneers or Crowns
These dental cosmetic options are offered in cases such as where your teeth are too discolored. Veneers are custom-made shells that are made of porcelain or composite resin. They are bonded over the front teeth and will be able to restore the aesthetic appearance of the teeth. Crowns are made of the same materials and metal. They are placed over severely damaged teeth to restore the function and appearance of the teeth.
Whitening Products
Whitening products refer to over-the-counter products to fix tooth discoloration at home. These could be whitening toothpaste, whitening strips, gels, and rinses. Whitening toothpaste contains mild abrasives that remove surface stains and gradually whiten teeth. Whitening strips are thin strips that are coated with a whitening product. They are worn on the teeth for several hours consecutively for a few days or weeks, effectively producing results in days.
