When a dentist first begins talking about dental surgery, the patient often experiences fear and panic because they assume that the surgery will be expensive and painful. But many patients don't realize dental surgeries are common. Most dental surgeries are outpatient procedures and not as invasive as you might think. Dentists often refer a patient to an oral surgeon who can assess the situation and determine the best treatment plan. Sometimes, non-surgical treatments can be recommended. The most common types of dental surgeries are those people usually wouldn't consider.
Root Canals
Root canals are the most common type of dental surgery. Many teeth are treated by root canals that save them from pulling and relieve sensitivity and pain. Under the enamel on a tooth is the dental pulp. The dental pulp is a softcore that contains nerve endings, tissue, and blood vessels. Bacteria can enter the tooth when it is decayed and damage the pulp. This pulp becomes infected and causes pain and swelling.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are a replacement for the roots of a tooth. Dental implants are used to secure crowns to the jaw bone and use titanium and titanium alloy. Titanium is lightweight and isn't rejected by the body. Dental implants can be used when teeth are missing due to decay, oral cancer, smoking, disease, and alcoholism.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom teeth are the third molars to come in located at the very back of the mouth. These are the last teeth to come in between ages 17 and 25. But, when they don't have room to grow, they can cause pain and oral infections from being impacted. This is an outpatient procedure and can take a few days to recover fully. Surgical incisions are made to remove the wisdom teeth, and the extraction site is stitched closed to help the healing process.
Reconstructive Surgery
Dental surgery for reconstruction is done for fractures and soft tissue injuries. Soft tissue injuries include trauma to the gums or skin, while fractures are related to the bone tissue in your mouth and include teeth or jawbone reconstruction.
Cosmetic Surgery
Often, cosmetic surgery isn't medically required but is done so the patient's face or smile's appearance improves. Cosmetic procedures include orthodonture and teeth whitening. Treatments to make teeth appear whiter do not just include bleaching. They also can consist of bonding and veneers. Cosmetic procedures are usually pain-free and are done in a dentist's office.
